Flesh Wound Reflections

(The blog will not let me indent, or space properly, argh!)

Reality began imitating art, as the adults in our home read the Twilight series. I became clutsy, like Bella. I walked in the front door of our home, I slipped, I fell hard -- right on my cushy bottom. (Luckily my backside is well padded, it lessened the impact.) And Charles, well, he was reminded that he is not immortal, yet. . .
The Wound

We received a brand new set of knives for Christmas. Charles was anxious to try the new sharp-edges out on something, he chose cheese. Charles was literally "cutting the cheese" when I heard a loud,"Ahhhhhhh!" coming from the kitchen.
I ran into the kitchen to find Charles by the sink, running water over his finger. The cheese on the table was spotted in blood, and a shiny silver-bladed knife was lying there, blood stained, and guilty. At first it looked little more than a mere scratch, but then, the blood kept flowing, and flowing, and Niagara Falls -- flowing.
Charles was laughing (while leaning over the sink, examining his blood-soaked finger). He cheerfully stated that we had ourselves some quality knives. But the blood kept spilling from his finger, and it was not going to stop. I was not laughing.
I quickly threw off my robe, and threw on some jeans, and a sweat-shirt. We had to go to the doctor, and fast! I grabbed William (the kids were out with Grandma and Grandpa -- thank goodness!) and we headed out to the Urgent Care, Charles holding his finger in a wad of red paper towels .
Normally, I am a very careful, cautious, and reserved driver. Especially when the roads are icy, and snow-covered. My caution flew to the wind. My normal slower-than-speed limit driving, was replaced by squeezing the lemons, and ignoring the posted numbers on the side of the road. (I figured, I was carrying a criminal prosecutor, he is law enforcement, even though I was not -- I was saving one of their kind, police that is.) Truly, my mind was fixed on one thing -- getting Charles to help! The blood should have been letting up, but it wasn't.
We arrived at the location where the Urgent Care was suppose to be, but the windows displayed "For Lease" signs. I ran into the nearest store and asked for directions to the closest medical office, they were helpful and we were on our way again.
We found the right place, and we zipped right in. I dropped Charles off at the door and found a parking space (it was unusually busy). The nurse (seeing so much blood) took us back right away.
She examined his laceration, saying words like, "Ohhhh, and Ummmm." The blood was still pumping out of Charles' finger, keeping tempo with his heart-beat, a very disturbing image. She said he had hit an artery, hence the waterfall of blood.
Moments later, a doctor came in to inspect the wound. Stitches. He would need stitches. He was hoping for the glue treatment, or something less severe, but there was no other option. Stitches it would be.
I stood there, with William in my arms, feeling quite nauseous, as Charles continued to smile -- without fear. He was a rock, a rock with a sense of humor. It was comforting to my churning stomach, though I still felt unusually weak. The nurse seemed to appreciate his jokes, and light-hearted dispostition.
The doctor came in, he worked a little numbing-medicine magic, and began the process of putting his skin back in place.
I watched the whole thing, wide-eyed, and curious, while shielding William's eyes behind a curtain. Charles closed his eyes and cringed as they stuck a needle in his cut, to numb the area. That act also seemed to slow the profuse bleeding. The doctor then proceeded to take out his magic thread, and he weaved it in and out of Charles pointer finger. It was really quite horrid to watch, but I could not turn my eyes away. I felt that if I watched, maybe the doctor would take special care not to make a mistake.
The doctor was fluid in his motion, and quick with his hands. It was like watching a seasoned seamstress, repairing a simple split seam. After many stitches, the doctor tied up the loose ends, and finished the job. The nurse offered ointment and band-aids, and off we went with instructions, and relief. We were grateful, and Charles was on his way to being "whole" again.

(I forgot to take a picture of his finger)

Reflection
We made our way home, and I thought about how quickly mishaps can happen. Most days you just go about life, sometimes eventful, sometime not. Some days are thrill-packed and meaningful, and some days seem void of action and purpose.
It is not until somebody gets hurt, you realize, as humans, we are mortal -- susceptible to injury, pain, and even death. Our days are numbered, our bodies are frail. We are in the hands of Deity, without ultimate control of our circumstances, or our departure time from this life. There is something about a flesh wound that stops you in your mortal tracks, and makes you consider your vulnerability.
However, these same human defects, injuries, pain, and death; remind us how glorious it will be one day, to be immortal! There will be a time, no. . . an eternity; of no injury, no pain, no death. Forever free of the frailties and weaknesses of mortality! What a fantastic thought, what a glorious truth!! The mind shutters in delight at the reality!
We cannot control all of our circumstances, this is true; the world is set in motion. But we can always control one thing: our agency. We can choose how we will react to what earth life throws our way. Whatever the injury or pain (or other trials that the earth has to divert) we can choose to follow God, always.
We can be determined to align, or intertwine, our will with His! As a result, we find happiness! If we live worthy, while mortal, there will be a day when we will be ripped from this limited mortality, to dwell forever with God, limitless, immortal. What a beautiful and stimulating thought! Immortal . . . Forever . . . because of Him . . .

Christmas

This was the view Christmas morning -- Santa was kind. :-)

Daniel was all about Star Wars this year. The helmet and light-up lightsabers (which also make the special lightsaber noise) were a highlight for him. :-)
William was so excited -- he could hardly stand it! :-)
This is a picture of our animal friends out our front window. I enjoy "feeding the birds" and the birds and other wildlife enjoy eating. It is fun to watch.

We slept on an air mattress in the kids room for Christmas eve. They wanted to "warm it up" for us. :-)
It is a tradition in our family to do Christmas eve pajamas. It was really funny this year, Charles ordered mine on-line, and my mother brought her Jammie's with her from Alaska -- no communication about it!! Weird! We both looked like Mrs. Claus in our floofy tents! It was cute.
The kids were very cheesed!
We had a lovely Christmas. It snowed and snowed and snowed some more! We all got a bit of cabin fever, the roads were really to slick to go anywhere, or do anything. We spent most of our time reading, playing, eating, and resting. It was a real break. I feel ready to get moving, rather than needing a rest from an event-filled vacation. It was nice to relax.

In the Zone

I have seen on many blogs and heard in many conversations, all about the book Twilight. I am NOT an avid novel reader, mostly because when I read, I am swept away into another world -- my children (and the world around me) become invisible to me. I can do scriptures, doctrine, non-fantasy stuff -- no problem. But take me to a fantasy world, and there I am -- reality disappears.

My parents came to visit for the holidays, and along with my mother, came the book (Thanks Katie-Lady). The day before Christmas, Charles happened to pick up the book, and he began reading. He was up all night, until he finished. The day after Christmas we went to see the movie. (A REAL date! Thanks mom and dad!) I enjoyed the movie, so I thought I would give the books a try. (I had extra people around to make sure reality was still taken care of.) ;-)

So far, I am really enjoying it! :-) I am still in the middle of the first book, with 3 more books to go! (We went to Borders and purchased all four.) Now, Charles and I must ration our evening time, so we can get a bit of reading in. :-)

I just thought these pictures were SO funny. I had my dad take them for us. We were really all 3 snuggled up together, entranced by another world. Every now and again we would pinch each other to make sure we were still there. ;-)

more Christmas pictures to come . . .

Little Joys

William has been enjoying the heater vent. :-) He likes to sit right on it.
I have been enjoying doing a little doodling lately, I just scribble on little index cards. It is relaxing, sort of. :-) The pictures are a little distorted in the camera/computer transfer.

Now I get to enjoy the kids! School is out!!!! The kids are MINE!!!! Hooray!

Whistle a Happy Tune

We went to Costco on Saturday, for a little Christmas shopping. Charles LOVES Costco, there is always a little twinkle in his eye when he is there. As he was walking down the bulk cereal isle, he began to whistle the Christmas song, Good King Wenceslas. Suddenly, we heard someone whistling along, in perfect harmony. We looked around to see where it was coming from. Charles began to giggle as he saw that the man creating such a lovely sound, was a well-known defense attorney! I love Christmas. Tis the season when even defense and prosecuting attorneys, can whistle together, in perfect harmony. :-)

Merry Christmas!!

A Little Silly Willy

William loves to sing O Holy Night. I will try and get a better video of him singing -- it is silly. He was in the middle of his exercising with the kids. :-)

This and That

Daniel lost his first tooth! We were in the car and William kicked him in the mouth (on accident) and out it popped! (His tooth was ready to come out!) He was so proud!
The kids love to have tumble-time. They bounce around like monkeys. They do cartwheels, splits, somersaults, and whatever other moves they come up with. They were trying to see how high they could get their legs up, William wanted to join in.
It was SO funny! He would get into position and then grunt really loud. He kept doing it over and over. He was receiving thunderous applause. :-) He sounded a lot like me when I do Tae-Bo! It has been foggy on and off here. I was walking home after dropping off the kids, and there was blue sky. Then there was literally a line I crossed over, and I was in fog. It was really cool! Rudolph will be needed this year for sure!
We were going through old clothes and I pulled out this darling coat and hat, that once belonged to Sammi. William thought it looked pretty fun, so he put it on. I was once again astonished at how much he looks like Sam! Silly-head!

The One Ring

I was trying to think of a gift I could give Charles for our anniversary. I sat and pondered for awhile, and then it came to me. Over a year ago he lost his wedding ring in our couch. It feel deep into the depths of the couch, never to be seen again, unless we pulled it apart. Well, what better a gift to give him, then his wedding ring? So, yesterday, I turned the couch upside-down, and tried to locate it. I could hear it deep inside. I started pulling pieces of fabric away, and after about an hour, and some very intense praying and swearing, and then praying again to repent of the swearing -- I found it! I was so excited! So, I wrapped up his ring, and gave it to him with a note that read, "My own, my love, my precious."

He was very happy. :-)

Look closely at the picture . . . it is Charles. :-) I was playing with opacity, you can do some really weird things!

Forward to Forever!!

Today marks nine years for us!! I love Charles more now than ever before. Words cannot express . . .

Onward to Eternity! Heaven would not be Heaven without Charles. :-)

Maybe Next Year . . . :-)

Happy Birthday Mommy!

You are the best mommy in the whole world, the universe, infinity, and beyond!
I LOVE YOU!!

Let my Light's Shine!

We spent all of last Saturday decorating the outside of our home for the holidays. Charles climbed up on the roof and hung icicle lights, using those special clips and everything -- very tedious work. Anyhow, we finished, and it was beautiful. We have enjoyed the lights all week.

Last night, after I plugged the lights in, I noticed they were not working. I panicked! I could not imagine undoing everything we had done! I could not figure out what the problem was, all of the lights were out, not just a strand. I am not a lighting guru, but I checked everything I could think of. The outlet was working fine, the lights were not burned out, the extension cord was fine. I glanced at the directions, to see if the lights had something special about them, I found nothing. I was really very upset, lights aren't cheap, but more importantly, I did NOT want Charles to have to get back on the roof to take them all down.

So, I sat down for a moment and I thought. Then I thought, you know, I am going to pray about this. It is such a small silly thing, and I know Heavenly Father is probably frying much bigger fish -- especially it being near Thanksgiving and all -- but I prayed none the less. I knew if anyone knew what to do about Christmas lights, it would be Him. :-)

After I prayed, I sat for a moment and pondered. A voice as clear as day spoke to my mind and said, "Replace the fuse." I heard it, loud and clear. I have never known anything about Christmas light fuses. I know all about replacing lights, but not the fuse. It just so happened, when I had previously glanced at the instructions, I had seen a small picture of the fuse, but I did not think anything of it. So the picture was in my mind, and as I prayed the picture was retrieved, and I knew exactly what I needed to look for.

I quickly jumped into action. I went to the first strand of lights and I located the fuse. Sure enough, one of them was burnt out. I got out tweezers and went to work at taking the tiny fuse out and replacing it with a new one. (So glad we kept all those little extra light packets, which also contain a fuse! I just never knew what it was!) I then anxiously plugged the lights into the outlet and, MAGIC! It worked! They were the most beautiful lights I had ever seen!

I was really so grateful for that clearly and quickly answered prayer. I did everything I could to try and fix the problem, but I needed help to know exactly what I needed to do, I could not do it alone. I know that God hears us, no matter how small a request may be. I quickly shared the story with the kids so they too would know that God is a God of miracles!

Now my light's can shine! :-) They shine all the brighter for me!!!

Tree Trimming

We did it! We found our tree! We went to a lot in the Albertson's parking area, they looked open, so we went on over. We talked to a lady there and she said they were not actually open until Friday. Charles said, "Oh that is too bad, we are getting our tree tonight." So, not wanting to lose our business, they let us in, and we got to be the first to pick our tree! We found a pretty good one, not as "perfect" or as huge as some in years past, but it is a good tree. It really is so fun to pick! The kids squealed with delight! I will take some pictures tonight of the feast and the tree in all it's glory. :-) It is hard to capture the real beauty of it with the camera, it does not like to take indoor pictures! I also cannot capture the yummy smell, or the feeling that goes along with the tree . . . I just love it!

The Tree

These pictures are from last Christmas. We are hoping to go out and find our tree tonight! If we cannot find it tonight, we will have to wait until after Thanksgiving -- sad!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Happy Thanksgiving from Alaska!

I am sure you have already seen this video, but for the few who may not have . . . ICKY!! What makes it so funny is she had no idea what was going on behind her!! She was there to "Pardon" a turkey!

Yummy Muffins!!

Success! I had muffin success! I have never made yummy muffins before. I would always try to make them without paper muffin liners (I would just use spray) and they would always stick to the pan. I learned my lesson! Anyhow, I had my first success! These muffins are SO yummy! Dangerous yummy!

Chocolate and Butterscotch Chip Muffins
Ingredients:
Muffins:
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup butterscotch chips
Topping:
2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butterscotch chips
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped pecans ( I did not add the pecans -I don't like nuts!)
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in sour cream and vanilla and mix well. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; add to butter mixture and stir just until moistened. Fold in the 1/3 cup chocolate chips and 1/3 cup butterscotch chips. Fill paper-lined muffin cups 2/3 full. In small bowl, combine topping ingredients. Sprinkle topping mix evenly over each muffin. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes in pan. Remove from pans and place on wire racks. Serve warm or cool.
Number of Servings: 12 muffins
They are amazingly good!

Thomas the Train
William had never seen a Thomas the Train movie before. I thought I would give him a thrill! I put it on the projector, his eyes opened wide, and he said, "CHOO, CHOO!" He was SO excited!
CHOO-CHOO!!!

What a silly-cutie-head!

Thanksgivings Past

Each year I post our Thanksgivings gone by. When I look at the pictures, they each mean so much to me! We have a tradition of getting a real tree a few days before Thanksgiving. We LOVE real trees, they are so beautiful! I love the way they smell. Finding the right tree is one of the joys of the season. One year our tree was SO huge it took over the whole living room -- but it was awesome!

This was our first Thanksgiving in Spokane, Washington. It was out first year in Law school, and before we had been informed about the joys of food stamps! We were so poor, we had a small chicken, egg rolls and ice cream as our feast! It was quite fitting in our 500 sqft home! What a sweet silly time! See the paper turkey on the fridge? That was all the decorating that occured that year!

This was the next year of Law school in Spokane. We had found a much more spacious apartment, and food stamps! Things were looking up! I LOVED that apartment. After living in 500 sqft with 2 children, anything more was (and is) Heaven!

Year 3 of Law school. Notice the giganto tree in the background! Food stamps were good that year!

Our first year of real employment, and our new city. It was a lovely time! :-) William with Mr. Santa. He comes to the ward party every year! Our tree from last year
Above is the tree that took over our living room. It was my very favorite tree. We were going to take it back, but I thought I would put some lights on to see how it might look. As I put the lights on the tree, it spoke to me and said, "you know you love me!" The tree was right, I DID love it! It was so huge, but SO beautiful! The best tree we have ever had!

The kids started putting away their blocks, and William thought he would join in the fun. :-)
He thought it was so great to be buried in blocks
Daniel was helping daddy change the oil in his truck. He felt pretty special to be daddy's side-kick!
